Digital newspeak characteristics

The previous chapter presents the history of the language and the process of its evolution.

The language is still evolving, which is particularly evident today. A milestone here was the emergence of the Internet and the opening up of the society to wider virtual communications. The characteristic features of the language used on the Internet have been defined:

  • economic way of communication,
  • specialization,
  • styling,
  • creating slang.

Economic way of communication consists in using various types of emoticons, abbreviations (acronyms). This efficiency is to speed up the time of writing a message, but also to present (for example by emoticons or emoji) the emotions that accompany us.

Examples of emoticons are, for example:

  • 😉 – happy,
  • 🙁 – sad,
  • 😮 – surprised,
  • :-S – worried.

Acronyms are used to speed up writing messages. Examples of acronyms are:

  • AFK – Away from keyboard,
  • ASAP – As soon as possible,
  • BRB – Be right back,
  • FYI – For your information.

Another special feature of digital speech is specialization. It is the use of a professional nomenclature when describing activities or objects related to the Internet, technology, while often using English terminology. Speaking of stylization as the essence of an internet language, we mean the formulation of words by transforming foreign words, for example from English to native language.

The last feature is the creation of slang. It is creating new words, transforming existing ones or giving them a different meaning.

Undoubtedly, the language we meet on the Internet is different from that used in real life. Digital speech, due to the lack of direct contact with another person, has created universally recognizable ways of transmitting content, e.g. a text written in BIG LETTERS will mean that the caller is shouting and the combination of sMaLl and LaRgE LeTtErS will be a sign of irony. Internet users do not stick to rigid spelling rules. Focused on the speed of conversation, do not attach importance to starting sentences from a capital letter or overuse punctuation, especially exclamation marks.

The digital newspeak is also characterized by replacing the text with pictures and not just by mentioned earlier emoticons. Internet communication is governed by its own laws, you can find positive aspects as well as negative ones. This is the next part of the article entitled “Pros and cons of internet communication”.
